Stowe Pickleball featured in the STOWE REPORTER. Hooray!

New (NEW) lines re-RE-Painted at Memorial Park. Thank you to Stowe Parks and Rec, Vermont Tennis Court Surfacing, and everyone in the Stowe Pickleball Club board for making this happen. Things are looking up!

July 16, 2022

The July, 2022 meeting with the town of Stowe Parks and Rec. Dept. was all about how best to meet the long term needs of the recreation community. An outdated building and expanding summer camp programming require the need to increase the size of the Gale building (Rec Bldg.) from 1500 to 5000 sq ft. The question of where to site that new building dominated the meeting. Interested parties (pickleball, tennis, hockey, etc.) were present as that decision could impact where they play. Consideration was given to a possible expansion of the Hockey Arena as a solution. If a new building is built on the current site, the courts would have to be moved…but where? While this decision will be complicated by permitting, drainage issues, and financial considerations, there are some options that should be explored. The commission decided to form a sub-committee to accomplish that task. The club plans to be represented on committee. Stowe Pickleball’s preference would be to stay in town on the Memorial Park property. We will keep you posted.

The temporary Memorial Park courts are very playable, but also with a few shortcomings (including the difficult to see and less than ideal black lines). We aim to suggest to the Parks and Rec. Dept. to remove the existing yellow lines from years ago pickleball line painting, and to redo the black lines with yellow lines instead, but great patience is required ;-) We will work on this with the Town of Stowe.

Remember that the High School has a multitude of playing restrictions, wind, and only 2 painted courts with tennis-centric nets. We would very much like to plead again with SPC players to focus on playing at Memorial Park (We are working with the Town of Stowe to add night-time hours to our playerlineup schedule of games for those who can’t always play in the mornings). We need to a show critical mass interest to help support the fruition of new, dedicated, town subsidized and supported pickleball courts in the revised Master Plan for Memorial Park which is presently under consideration.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The “new” courts are in, and ummm, it’s a bit surprising. New games to be scheduled soon. Check back here in the next several days to learn more.

We must admit that this temporary fix does not meet all our expectations (hence the color and paint job which we hope can be corrected) but please understand we are on it to get permanent new courts / surfaces in place in the coming years. The rec commission and the town of Stowe have been very helpful with us getting dedicated and (mostly) repaired surfaces / nets / playing time on taxpayer supported municipal courts at Memorial Park, as well as a place and recreational / building area which is under intense review for a complete and much needed rebuild subject to many (many) state permitting issues, with stormwater, wetlands, beavers, and birds all playing a role... Welcome to Vermont! Stay tuned and enjoy the temporarily improved court conditions for now. Let’s show the town that we pickleballl players are going to show up and enjoy the fastest growing sport in America!

April 26, 2022

Beginning Sunday May 1, 2022, outdoor games will be scheduled every Sunday at the Stowe High School. Woohoo! Check it out at and be sure to sign up for the games by visiting https://stowepickleball.playerlineup.com

Then… Once the fences are mended, and the town courts are resurfaced, repainted, and officially open for play at Memorial Park (starting May 30, 2022), additional games will be scheduled on the fancy new courts nearly every day of the week!

April 23, 2022:

Stowe Pickleball Club and the town of Stowe have partnered up in developing 6 (yup, you read that right: SIX!) municipally provided pickleball courts available for play at Memorial Park. All of the Parks and Rec meetings we attended in 2020, 2021, and 2022 really paid off. Thank you all for your support and perseverance. When the courts are resurfaced and ready for play beginning on Memorial Day (May 30, 2022), we’ll let everyone officially know, and the scheduled pickleball games will be listed here: https://stowepickleball.playerlineup.com

Recently Stowe Pickleball Club council members Michael Diender and Bill Little met with a group in Stowe Town Hall which consisted of lead members of the Stowe Recreation Committee as well as Stowe Engineering and Operations personnel. Although we were not quite able to achieve everything that we had hoped for this year, we still count our efforts this year a great success! Some aspects of our Pickleplex plan were temporarily thwarted by other larger-scale infrastructure concerns such as: Vermont state stormwater rules and regulations, long-term recreation facilities planning, and other Town of Stowe priorities.

Here are some highlights:

● All members of the Town of Stowe Rec. Dept. recognized the important need for upgrading and updating the usefulness of the existing tennis court area and the growing popularity of Pickleball within the Stowe community.

● The Rec. Commission has been both publicly and privately very supportive of improving the courts for both tennis and Pickleball. Additionally, Pickleball will most certainly factor into the long-term Rec. Commission goals when that plan is submitted to the Selectboard this upcoming fall/winter 2021/2022 program. We’ll plan for SPC to stay involved as this process moves forward. Our goal is to have available to the public, 6-8 permanent Pickleball courts, along with fencing, lighting, with seating area and restrooms by 2025.

● It was agreed that the existing tennis courts would get immediate repairs and re-lined with a new layout consisting of either one or two tennis courts and the lining of six Pickleball courts with moveable nets. These additional courts will certainly help SPC accommodate our growing membership for the next year or two. While we would like these new courts to be constructed immediately, they will most likely be completed by next summer, 2022.

● As we get closer to completion, SPC will work with the Town of Stowe on both a management plan and scheduled play times so both the needs of the SPC as well as those of the greater Stowe community may be fully realized.

Thank you ALL for your continued support as SPC grows and helps to manifest a community recreation area we can all enjoy for many years to come.

SUCCESS! Our meeting with Stowe Parks and Recreation on July 7, 2021 went very well.

OK folks. Part one has been accomplished. We had about a dozen participants show up to our first major public meeting with the town of Stowe in support of ensuring that Pickleball Courts will make their way into the next stages of Memorial Park’s future upgrades in the coming years. A very special thank you to Michael Diender for spearheading this campaign and for everyone’s continued enthusiastic encouragement and involvement. Stay tuned for more updates as they progress.

The Stowe Pickleball Club appeared before the Stowe Recreation Commission last Wednesday with a proposal and large-format CAD drawing for an expanded court footprint that would replace the two currently existing tennis courts at Memorial Park. The goal of the updated plan is to complete construction of FOUR dedicated Pickleball courts and ONE new Tennis court in the next 1-2 years. The new Tennis court would also be lined for 4 additional Pickleball courts with 4 moveable Pickleball nets.

Awesome news... We received unanimous support from the Rec. Commission; and the next level of review & approval is at the Town Hall level, which often includes a certain amount of bureaucracy as we compete for limited municipal (taxpayer funded) resources. We will continue to work to promote our plan with those involved (Town Administrator, Town Engineer, Selectboard, etc) to get this to the voters as soon as possible.

Please continue to talk up this awesome sport and this municipal project to those you know in the community. Do not hesitate to contact me, Michael Diender, or anyone on the SPC management team if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Stowe Pickleplex 2025!

Our current mission statement:

Pickleball has enjoyed explosive growth both nationally and in Vermont. Our club is growing, too, and we will soon need more courts. To accommodate this growth and continue to leverage Stowe’s position as an active year-round community, SPC will be presenting a proposal to the Town of Stowe to build Stowe Pickleplex 2025. Our vision is for the town to construct four to six new dedicated pickleball courts with fencing, lighting, seating, social area, restrooms, and possibly at a later date - indoor facilities. Yes, this is an ambitious plan and it will take several years to complete, but it will bring significant benefits to Stowe. With proper facilities, Stowe could become a nationally recognized Pickleball destination. As we’ve learned with tennis and skiing, fitness-oriented individuals will make vacation decisions based on their sports. Pickleball tourism will drive up occupancy and other disposable income spending in summer and shoulder seasons, so the initiative has both an economic and health benefit. Your support and help promoting this initiative will be key to our success. Stay tuned for more updates going forward.
